Additional information about the urinary tract infection test:
Urinary tract infections are the second most common type of infection diagnosed today. Although they are easily treated with antibiotics, they can still cause a great deal of pain and discomfort if not detected and treated early.
A UTI (also known as a bladder infection) is a common condition that occurs when bacteria enter the normally sterile urinary tract and multiply. If you have a UTI, you’ll usually experience: a frequent urge to urinate, even after you’ve just emptied your bladder; a burning sensation during urination; pressure in the lower abdomen; and other symptoms.
Signs and Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infections
The symptoms of a UTI can vary, and it is possible for someone with a urinary tract infection to experience no symptoms at all. But for many people, the symptoms of a UTI are uncomfortable and painful. In addition to a strong, constant urge to urinate, common symptoms include:
- Pain or a burning sensation during urination
- Passing small amounts of urine
- Cloudy urine with a strong odor
- Red or pink urine, indicating the presence of blood
- Discharge from the urethra, resembling mucus or pus, usually in men
- Incontinence (involuntary leakage of urine, inability to voluntarily hold urine).
When a urinary tract infection spreads to the kidneys, symptoms such as high fever, chills, shivering, and pain in the upper back, sides, or groin may occur.
Advantages:
- Fast results
- At-home testing, no need to visit a lab
- Visual interpretation of results
- Easy to use
- High accuracy and reliability
Testing procedure and interpretation of results
Before proceeding with the test, read the storage instructions included with the test and review the procedure card.
Using the test
1) Open the foil pouch and remove the test strip. Do not touch the test fields.
2) Dip the test strip into the urine sample, making sure that all four test fields are submerged for about 1–2 seconds.
3) Remove the test strip and wipe off any excess urine on the edge of the container or with an absorbent material (e.g., a paper towel) to prevent cross-contamination from adjacent reagents.
4) Wait 2 minutes and read the result separately for each parameter. Do not read the results after 3 minutes, as they may not reflect an accurate result!
Interpreting the Results
Read the result separately for each parameter; compare the color to the color chart provided:

Color changes at the edges of the test strips or color changes occurring more than 3 minutes after application should be ignored.
NEGATIVE
- The test field for LEUKOCYTES remains whitish.
- The test field for BLOOD remains mustard yellow.
- The test field for NITRITE remains white.
- The test field for PROTEIN remains yellowish.
POSITIVE RESULT FOR LEUKOCYTES
- If the color of the test field has changed to purple, this means that leukocytes have been detected in your urine.
POSITIVE RESULT FOR BLOOD
- If the color of the test field has changed to green (or green spots appear in the background), then blood has been detected in your urine.
POSITIVE RESULT FOR NITRITES
- If the color of the test field has changed to pink, then nitrites have been detected in your urine.
POSITIVE RESULT FOR PROTEIN
- If the color of the test field has changed to green, this means that protein has been detected in your urine.
Quality Control
- The appearance of a colored line in the control strip serves as a quality control—this indicates a sufficient sample volume, proper absorption by the membrane, and that the procedure was performed correctly.
- The absence of coloration in the background around the lines serves as a control for the procedure. If coloration appears in this background to the extent that it makes it difficult to read the coloration in the lines, the test result may be invalid.
