Various types of tests for infectious diseases, including COVID-19 and the flu.

The tests are suitable for at-home use and for laboratories.

They also differ in the method of sample collection for analysis:

nasopharyngeal—using a long sterile swab to collect a sample from the back of the nasal cavity and the throat;
saliva-based—gentle and suitable for young children and infants. The sample is collected from saliva gathered in a container and transferred to a test tube using a pipette.
Blood tests—used to detect the presence of antibodies to a specific disease, indicating a past infection. Self-testing kits come with a single-use automatic lancet and a disinfectant wipe. A single drop of blood is required, obtained by pricking the finger with the lancet—a virtually painless procedure.

The tests also differ in whether they are designed for a single infectious disease or are combination tests that detect (separately) the presence of different viruses, such as COVID-19, influenza A, or influenza B.
