What Is a Breathalyzer?
“Breathalyzer” is the common name used in Bulgaria for a device that measures alcohol levels through exhaled breath. It precisely measures the concentration of alcohol in a person’s blood and provides information about their condition.
Principle of Operation
The measurement principle is as follows: the breathalyzer takes a sample of exhaled air and feeds it into a special sensor. The sensor measures the alcohol concentration, which is then converted to blood alcohol concentration. Breathalyzers display the measured values in per mille (one thousandth) or in another unit convenient for the user.
The conversion of the measured concentration in exhaled breath to blood alcohol concentration is possible due to the equalization of partial pressures according to Henry’s law. For this conversion to be accurate, the sample of exhaled air must come from the deep parts of the lungs.
