What is HIV?

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the immune system and can lead to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) if left untreated. HIV is transmitted primarily through:
Unprotected sexual contact
Sharing needles or syringes
From an infected mother to her baby during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding

🛑 Important: HIV is not transmitted through kissing, hugging, sharing utensils, or casual contact.

Why is it important to get tested?

🩺 Early detection of HIV is vital for starting treatment, which can help people with the virus lead long and healthy lives.
🛡 Regular testing is recommended for anyone who has been at risk, even if they have no symptoms.

Key features of the test:

Quick and easy to use – Results in just 15 minutes
Non-invasive – uses oral fluid instead of blood
High accuracy92% sensitivity and 98.3% specificity
Clear results – visual indication of a positive, negative, or invalid result
The kit contains everything you needtest cassette, sterile swab, extraction solution, and instructions for use

How do you use it?

1️⃣ Do not eat, don’t drink, and don’t smoke for at least 10 minutes before the test.
2️⃣ Wash your hands with soap and water.
3️⃣ Collect a sample—wipe the inside of your upper and lower gums with the sterile swab.
4️⃣ Place the swab in the extraction solution and mix well.
5️⃣ Place 3 drops of the sample into the test cassette.
6️⃣ Wait 15 minutes and read the result.

Interpreting the Results:

Positive: Two colored lines (control and test) – consult a doctor for a confirmatory test.
Negative: One line in the control zone – no antibodies detected.
Invalid: Control line is missing – the test must be repeated.

🛑 Important: The test does not detect a recent infection – it is best used at least 3 months after potential exposure.

Additional Information

  • Regular testing is key to prevention. If you are in a high-risk group, it is recommended that you get tested every 3 to 6 months.
  • HIV treatment (antiretroviral therapy) allows people with the virus to lead fulfilling lives and prevents the transmission of HIV to others.
  • When should the test be used?
This test detects HIV infection if used 3 months after a high-risk event. If you want to get tested before 3 months have passed, you should see your doctor or a local healthcare provider.
If you have HIV, it will show up on the HIV self-test kit if at least three months have passed since you were exposed. This three-month period, during which HIV may be present but not detectable, is also called the window period.
