Description

A rapid urine drug test in the form of a cassette with a pipette for detecting traces of methaqualone use.

What is Methaqualone?

Methaqualone is a synthetic sedative-hypnotic substance with a strong depressant effect on the central nervous system. Due to the high risk of addiction and abuse, its production is banned internationally, but it remains the subject of illicit trafficking and abuse as a narcotic.

Formerly known by the brand names Quaalude and Mandrax methaqualone is an extremely dangerous sedative-hypnotic depressant that is now banned for medical use worldwide. Due to the high risk of abuse and rapidly developing severe dependence, detecting it through a urine test is a critically important tool for prevention, parental supervision, and toxicological screening.

⚠️ Risks and Dangers Associated with the Use of Methaqualone

  • Rapid Physical and Psychological Dependence: Methaqualone rapidly alters brain chemistry, causing intense cravings for the substance and severe withdrawal symptoms upon cessation.
  • Loss of Motor Control (“Ataxia”): Users experience a complete loss of coordination, dizziness, muscle weakness, and numbness in the limbs, leading to severe physical injuries.
  • Risk of Fatal Overdose: The difference between the dose required to produce a narcotic effect and the toxic dose is minimal. An overdose leads to convulsions, delirium, coma, and respiratory arrest.
  • Lethal when mixed with alcohol: Mixing methaqualone with alcohol or other depressants (such as benzodiazepines) greatly increases its toxic effects and is the most common cause of death.

Drug Detection Window

Urine drug tests detect both the drugs themselves and their metabolites. The tests are immunological and are interpreted visually. After a drug is ingested, the metabolism process varies from person to person. Individual factors such as weight, age, metabolism, as well as specific intake conditions—such as consumption with liquids, food, alcohol, etc.—also play a role. Therefore, the time during which a given drug can be detected in urine, known as the detection window, is relatively broad.

Characteristics of the Methaqualone Urine Test:

    • Substance of interest: Methaqualone (MQL)
    • Analysis: chromatographic immunoassay
    • Cut-off (detection threshold): 300 ng/mL
    • Detection window: 2 to 4 days of use
    • Test duration: up to 5 minutes

Original instructions for use with full technical specifications.

Fast results

Ready for interpretation just 5 minutes after applying 3 drops of urine to the cassette’s collection well.

Application

Urine tests are suitable for screening for drug use:

  • among families and loved ones concerned about their children or friends;
  • in schools and other educational institutions;
  • in rehabilitation centers, hospitals, and clinics providing substitution therapy;
  • in prisons, correctional facilities, and other institutions.

Urine tests cannot determine whether a person is currently under the influence of a drug, but only detect traces of past use. Saliva tests are better suited for detecting more recent use. You can find more details on this topic in this article.
