Principle of Operation

The test is based on an immunological process in so-called biosensors. The biosensors contain specific antibodies that turn red if the sample contains drugs. All DrugWipe A tests detect drugs in samples from:

• saliva (via a swab from the mouth);
• skin (via a swab from the palms, forehead, and other parts of the body with higher sweat secretion);
• traces left on objects (via swabs from tools, steering wheels, suitcase handles, smartphones, keyboards, mice, credit cards, etc.);
• substance (powder, crystals, leafy material, liquid),
• invisible traces of the substance (rubbing from a small bag/box/hiding place where the drug is suspected to have been stored).

Intuitive Interpretation

DrugWipe tests are easy to interpret for “positive” results: the appearance of a red test line indicates a positive result. Even minimal coloration is a definite positive result!

The saliva sample is collected from the mouth by gently swabbing the tongue and/or the inside of the cheeks. A positive result indicates drug use within the past 4–12 hours, depending on the drug and other factors. It is possible to collect a sample even when the mouth is completely dry.

Drugs are also excreted from the body through the sweat glands, which allows traces of them to be detected in the sweat of a person who has used drugs for several hours after use.  Testing is performed by using a swab to collect a sample from the areas of the body that sweat the most: the hands, forehead, neck, or other skin surfaces with active sweat glands. This is the most discreet way to collect a sample from a person, but it should be noted that the detection window for drugs is longer; that is, it is possible that the person being tested is no longer under the influence of the drug.

The presence of drugs in sweat makes it possible to test an object touched by a person who has recently used drugs. Traces of drugs can be found on a vehicle’s steering wheel, on a keyboard, on a cell phone, on the touchable parts of devices, machines, etc.  Once left on an object, traces of drugs can be identified for a significantly longer period, as their degradation is slowed and the detection window can last for days. Testing is performed by swabbing the surface of the object and takes no more than a few seconds. This testing method is suitable for confirming suspicions, since the sample is not taken directly from a person and there is no certainty that another individual has not touched the tested object.

It is possible to test a substance directly by taking a swab of microscopic traces of the substance being examined. The test is extremely sensitive and reacts reliably even to nanograms, so even invisible amounts of the substance (such as traces left by tablets, powder, or dry matter in an empty hiding place or small bag) are sufficient to yield a positive test result. A sample can also be collected from liquid substances, including invisible traces of liquids.

Key differences between urine and saliva tests

• The detection window for drugs in saliva most closely corresponds to their detection in the bloodstream, therefore a positive result on a saliva test is a reliable indication of recent use;
• A less intrusive sampling method. Collecting a saliva sample minimally intrudes on the test subject’s personal space;
• Greater security during sample collection. The saliva test cannot be tampered with by the person being tested, as the sample is collected directly by the tester. Unlike saliva, monitoring urine sample collection is much more difficult and intrusive, and without supervision, test subjects can easily tamper with the urine sample.
